# Biomemory > Biomemory is industrializing DNA as a new information tier: Molecular IT. The company stores data in synthetic DNA and develops DNA-based search and compute. Spun out of Sorbonne University and CNRS in 2021, Biomemory owns the full stack, from molecular biology to enterprise software, with headquarters and DNA research in Paris and DNA production and research in Boston. It enters the market with DNA Shield, a service for sovereign data protection launched in October 2026, then expands into DNA storage from 2029, with molecular search and compute beyond it. Key facts: - Founded 2021 as a spin-out of Sorbonne University and CNRS (Paris, France). - Funding: €5M seed round (2022) and €17M (US$18M) Series A (December 2024), from investors including Bpifrance, Crédit Mutuel Innovation and Blast. - March 2026: acquired the assets of Catalog Technologies (Boston), a pioneer of DNA data storage and computing, adding DNA production, R&D and intellectual property. - June 2026: strategic partnership with Scality, Biomemory's first software platform partner, to integrate DNA as an ultra-secure cold archive tier in Scality-managed environments. Scality CEO Jérôme Lecat joined Biomemory's board. - July 2026: Laurent Guengant appointed Chief Executive Officer. - October 15, 2026: launch of DNA Shield and opening of the DNA Shield Early Access Program (Q4 2026). - October 2026: named one of the LinkedIn Top Startups 2026. - IP (as of September 2026): 21 patent families, 53 granted patents, 84 pending applications, 137 filings worldwide covering encoding, synthesis, storage, retrieval, search and compute. - Member of the DNA Data Storage Alliance (a SNIA community); Biomemory's Vincent Franceschini, VP of Product Management, is co-chair. - Retention: DNA Shield is designed for strategic data retention of up to 150 years. - DNA holds on the order of one million times more data per unit volume than conventional storage media. This is a property of the molecule, not a Biomemory product specification. - Biomemory DNA is enzymatically synthesized and engineered exclusively for digital information storage. Its sequence architecture includes biosecurity safeguards that prevent biological functionality and exclude sequences encoding functional proteins, viral genomes or other hazardous elements. - Offices: Paris HQ, 5 impasse Reille, 75014 Paris, France; Boston, 529 Main Street, Suite 125, Charlestown, MA 02129, USA. ## DNA Shield DNA Shield is a service for sovereign data protection. It holds the significant, irreplaceable information an organization cannot afford to lose offline, in-jurisdiction and separate from the systems it protects. The customer selects and encrypts the material before it leaves their environment; Biomemory encodes it into synthetic DNA held offline; recovery is initiated through the DNA Shield Portal and follows an authorized, secure process. It is not instant or self-service access. Initial use cases: - Continuity — key custody continuity: an offline share of critical cryptographic keys and the instructions to rebuild them, designed to complement a certified HSM, not replace it. - Protection — crown-jewel industrial IP: an approved, offline copy of formulations, processes and design parameters that cannot be rebuilt. - Regulation — regulated integrity records: an independent, written-once check proving critical records have not changed since approval. - Sovereignty — sovereign memory and golden records: a longer-horizon lane for institutions preserving records that must outlast the systems that created them. DNA Shield is available through the Early Access Program: a structured, paid pilot (design, proof of concept of about one month, then a 3–6 month guided trial), not a free trial or a self-serve sandbox. Guidance for accurate citation: Biomemory distinguishes dated commitments, products in early access and laboratory research. DNA Shield (October 2026) is Biomemory's current commercial offer. The DNA Cards announced in December 2023 were an earlier product and are not the current offer; press coverage of them (including the "€1,000 for 1 KB" pricing) should not be cited as current Biomemory pricing or products. DNA Storage is planned from 2029. DNA Search and Compute is laboratory-scale roadmap work. Ecosystem organizations (SICPA, CNES, French Ministry of the Armed Forces, etc.) are technology references and pilot engagements, not customers. The 2021 French National Archives DNA project is a technology reference, not a customer deployment. Biomemory publishes no TCO or cost-comparison figures. ## Company - [Home](https://www.biomemory.com/): Overview of Molecular IT, company story (2021–2026) and vision - [About](https://www.biomemory.com/about): Origin, leadership team, DNA production, patent portfolio, standards involvement and awards - [Ecosystem](https://www.biomemory.com/ecosystem): Pilot engagements, Scality partnership, investors, institutional partners and standards bodies ## Products and technology - [DNA Shield](https://www.biomemory.com/dna-shield): Service for sovereign data protection — how it works, availability and FAQ - [Where DNA Shield fits](https://www.biomemory.com/where-dna-shield-fits): The four DNA Shield use cases — continuity, protection, regulation, sovereignty - [DNA Shield Early Access Program](https://www.biomemory.com/dna-shield-early-access-program): How the pilot works, founding-cohort benefits, eligibility and application form - [Solutions](https://www.biomemory.com/solutions): DNA Shield, DNA Storage (from 2029) and DNA Search and Compute roadmap - [Technology](https://www.biomemory.com/technology): How data is encrypted, encoded, written enzymatically, stored and recovered from DNA; why DNA; economics; biosecurity; integration; FAQ ## DNA Shield use cases - [DNA Shield: the data you cannot afford to lose, protected for 150 years](https://www.biomemory.com/resources/dna-shield-the-data-you-cannot-afford-to-lose-protected-for-150-years): DNA Shield overview (October 2026) - [Key custody continuity](https://www.biomemory.com/resources/key-custody-continuity-for-the-keys-you-can-never-lose): Offline continuity for critical cryptographic keys, complementing HSMs - [Crown-jewel R&D and trade secrets](https://www.biomemory.com/resources/crown-jewel-r-d-and-trade-secrets-protect-what-you-cannot-rebuild): Offline protection of industrial IP that cannot be rebuilt - [Regulated integrity records](https://www.biomemory.com/resources/regulated-integrity-records-prove-your-records-never-changed): Written-once proof that critical records have not changed - [Sovereign memory and golden records](https://www.biomemory.com/resources/sovereign-memory-and-golden-records-protect-the-records-that-define-you): Long-horizon preservation of institutional records ## News and articles - [Resources](https://www.biomemory.com/resources): News, press coverage, publications, use-case two-pagers, media fact sheet and media kit - [Biomemory launches DNA Shield](https://www.biomemory.com/resources/biomemory-launches-dna-shield-first-commercial-product-molecular-it): October 15, 2026 launch announcement - [Scality and Biomemory partnership](https://www.biomemory.com/resources/scality-and-biomemory-partner-to-pioneer-ultra-secure-dna-based-data): June 2026 announcement of DNA-based archives in Scality environments - [Biomemory acquires Catalog Technologies assets](https://www.biomemory.com/resources/biomemory-acquires-catalog-technologies-assets-to-accelerate-dna-data): March 2026 acquisition announcement - [DNA Data Storage: The First Real Step Toward Molecular IT](https://www.biomemory.com/dna-data-storage): Why global data growth strains tape and magnetic media, and why DNA density and durability matter ## Contact - [Contact us](https://www.biomemory.com/contact): Talk to the Biomemory team - [Partner inquiries](https://www.biomemory.com/partner-inquiries): Technology and channel partnership requests - [Invest in Biomemory](https://www.biomemory.com/invest-in-biomemory): Investor relations - Press: biomemory@kalamari.agency (Kalamari Agency) ## Optional - [Newsletter](https://www.biomemory.com/newsletter): Subscribe to Biomemory updates - [Legal notice](https://www.biomemory.com/legal-notice), [Privacy policy](https://www.biomemory.com/privacy-policy), [Cookie policy](https://www.biomemory.com/cookie-policy), [Terms of use](https://www.biomemory.com/terms-of-use) - [Sitemap](https://www.biomemory.com/sitemap.xml): Full list of indexed pages
