Biomemory spun out of Sorbonne University and CNRS in 2021. Most players in DNA data storage hold one piece of the stack; Biomemory spans molecular biology, biochemistry, hardware, software, and industrial production in a single integrated platform, the hard part of this field. The same research lineage reached a sovereign milestone in 2021, when the French National Archives preserved two founding texts in DNA using the CNRS and Sorbonne science behind Biomemory, a technology reference rather than a customer or a deployment.

The decision since has been to industrialize that science rather than keep it in the laboratory. After the Catalog acquisition, Biomemory owns DNA production in Boston alongside its site in Paris. As of 7th September 2026, pending final country-level reconciliation. Biomemory's IP portfolio spans 21 patent families, with 53 patents already granted — across 10 of those families — and 84 further applications pending, for 137 total filings worldwide spanning encoding, synthesis, storage, retrieval, search, and compute. That owned production and consolidated IP is what a well-funded rival cannot buy quickly.

After Catalog’s assets acquisition in 2026, Biomemory owns DNA production in Boston, with a second line to come in Paris. With patents spanning encoding, synthesis, storage, retrieval, search, and compute, and co-chairmanship of the DNA Data Storage Alliance.

Beyond silicon

2021 - From research to reality

Biomemory spins out of CNRS and Sorbonne University, building on years of academic research. Its technology is demonstrated through a landmark project: storing the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen and the Declaration of the Rights of Woman in DNA, with copies preserved by the French National Archives.

2024 - €18M to turn technology into products

Biomemory raises €18 million from Bpifrance, Crédit Mutuel Innovation, Blast and other investors. The funding accelerates technology development and, critically, its productization, turning scientific breakthroughs into deployable DNA Data Storage solutions and enabling the company to engage its first customers.

March 2026 - Scaling up with Catalog’s technology and expertise

Biomemory acquires key assets from Catalog, significantly expanding its capabilities and intellectual property portfolio to more than 90 patents. The acquisition also brings world-class DNA Data Storage experts into the team and establishes a production and R&D footprint in Boston, alongside its Paris operations.

June 2026 - Opening a new route to enterprise customers

Biomemory signs its first partnership with a cloud and data storage provider, Scality. The collaboration creates an additional route into enterprise IT environments, complementing Biomemory’s direct sales model and paving the way for DNA Data Storage to integrate with existing storage infrastructures.
